LUBMER™

Self-lubricating special polyethylene resin

LUBMER™ is a special polyethylene developed by Mitsui Chemicals using proprietary polymerization technology. It is in pellet form and can be injection molded or extrusion molded.
LUBMER™  has the characteristics of high sliding properties, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, noise reduction which is a characteristic of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
In addition to standalone molding, it can also be used as an additive to improve the sliding properties and abrasion resistance of engineering plastics.

Applications detail

Gear parts, switch parts, bearings, rail parts, sliding components, glass-run channel, film, pipes and tubes, resin modifier, PTFE replacement

Characteristics

Summary

UHMW-PE stands for Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, and as the name suggests, refers to a type of polyethylene with a very high molecular weight.  Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has an average molecular weight of at least 1,000,000, exhibits excellent sliding properties and abrasion resistance and is a polyethylene classified as and engineering plastic that possesses high strength. In response to recent trends in PFAS regulations, it is attracting attention as a substitute material for PTFE, and its track record and reputation are rapidly increasing.

Sliding properties

LubmerTM demonstrates a low coefficient of friction similar to fluoropolimers and exhibits superior abrasion resistance to other polyolefins and engineering plastics.

Abrasion resistance

LubmerTM exhibits superior overall abrasion resistance compared to polyacetal, nylon and PBT. It possesses good abrasion resistance that is a characteristic to ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.

Chemical resistance

LubmerTM is stable against various chemicals particularly against acids, alkalis and alcohol.

Noiseless properties

LubmerTM does not easily generate a squeaking noise even when combined with various other materials. This makes it ideal for applications where quiet operation is required.

Using Lubmer™ as a modifier

LUBMER™ LY1040 can be used as an additive in engineering plastics. Figures below show the decrease in the coefficient of friction (COF) and abrasion loss by addition of 5wt% and 10wt% LY1040 to various materials.
